{"id":1822,"date":"2025-05-09T10:38:07","date_gmt":"2025-05-09T08:38:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/creativityhelm.com\/?p=1822"},"modified":"2025-05-09T10:38:08","modified_gmt":"2025-05-09T08:38:08","slug":"how-to-move-out-of-your-creative-comfort-zone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/creativityhelm.com\/?p=1822","title":{"rendered":"The comfort zone"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why we like to stick to the same songs instead of trying something new (and what this means for creativity)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I don\u2019t know about you, but I have songs I keep coming back to, over and over again.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I know exactly how they\u2019re going to sound and how they\u2019re going to make me feel. I guess they\u2019re the equivalent of pulling on a favourite cardigan. I know exactly what I\u2019m getting and that\u2019s exactly what I think I want in that moment. I&#8217;m right in my comfort zone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there\u2019s more to it than that.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those songs from our, shall we say, formative years aren&#8217;t just melodies. And it\u2019s a feeling I\u2019ve come to treasure, and one I know I can make happen by listening to the song.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The comfort of the familiar<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our brains process familiar music differently to something we\u2019re hearing for the first time. It requires less cognitive effort and it delivers an immediate emotional reward (thanks, Tracy!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last week I talked about how it can be hard to get started listening to a whole&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/creativityhelm.com\/?p=1811\">new genre of music<\/a>. But even opening up your current playlist to some new songs can feel like a bit of a challenge.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our musical tastes tend to solidify and it\u2019s easy and comforting to return again and again to the soundtrack of our teens and twenties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it turns out that,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/science-has-discovered-why-your-parents-hate-your-music\/\">the older we get<\/a>, the more difficult it can be for our brains to as easily distinguish between different sounds, so that new music can start to sound a bit same-ish.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The creative benefit of seeking out new sounds<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m as guilty of listening to the same things over and over as the next person, but I\u2019ve been thinking about what it might mean if we do allow ourselves to become more open to new music, even within the genres we prefer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because what if our musical comfort zone isn\u2019t just affecting our listening habits but also reinforcing broader creative patterns, our receptiveness to novelty and uncertainty?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same part of us that says, \u2018I don\u2019t want to listen to that\u2019, might be surprisingly close to the part that thinks, \u2018That\u2019s not really my thing\u2019 or \u2018I could never do that\u2019 when faced with new creative possibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our brains are pattern-making machines. They love efficiency, categorisation, and prediction. But creativity thrives on the opposite, on connections between things that don\u2019t necessarily seem to go together and on unexpected detours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But maybe the answer is just to make small changes every now and then. Give a new song a chance at least all the way through once or twice, order something different at your favourite restaurant once in a while, and don\u2019t let the Netflix algorithm choose your next movie.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m not going to stop listening to the songs I love and know so well.
